By 2015, “friendly” wasn’t enough anymore. The market wanted proof.
Challenge
Familiar Becomes a Ceiling
The “nerdy but lovable” positioning that made programmatic advertising feel safe in 2012 had done its job — and by 2015, new leadership and a more sophisticated customer base had outgrown it. An audience that once needed reassurance now wanted to see Rocket Fuel as a serious, premium authority.
Insight
Approachable Isn’t the Same as Authoritative
The same warmth that built trust with a skeptical market can read as lightweight to a market that’s already sold — the brand had to trade “approachable” for “authoritative” without losing the humanity that got it there in the first place.
Answer
A Sharper Story
A full relaunch — new visual identity, print and web campaigns, a redesigned website, and a revised brand standards system — moved the brand from illustrative and playful toward a sharper, more premium look and feel built for a customer base that no longer needed to be won over, just respected.
Campaign: Moment Scoring
People aren’t the same person all day. Who you are at your desk isn’t who you are on a Friday night — and Moment Scoring™ understood the difference. This was the idea Rocket Fuel used to reintroduce itself to the market in 2015 with a new look and a new message.
Same Person, Different Moment
Most marketing technology treats a customer as one fixed profile. Rocket Fuel’s Moment Scoring™ knew better: who you are at your desk isn’t who you are on a Friday night. The campaign made that gap visible — showing the same person shifting from one context to the next — because if marketers could see it, they’d understand why timing mattered as much as targeting. Moment Scoring™ gave them a way to reach real people in real moments, not just personas.
Moment Scoring Storytelling
Will keeps getting mistaken for four different people — a laptop, a tablet, a work computer, a phone — each shouting “I’m Will” just to be seen as one person. Moment Scoring fixed that, following him through a single day — car-shopping at home, tuned out at work, hooked on the train — so marketers could reach him with the right message on the right device at exactly the right moment because devices don’t buy cars. People do.
The Brand Glows Up and Grows Up
The relaunch didn’t ask Rocket Fuel to stop being human — it asked the brand to stop over-explaining itself. The new brand guide set the tone in a single line: intelligent, factual, not boastful. “We may be the smartest kids in class, but we don’t need to show off our report cards.” Confidence had to come from restraint, not reassurance — and the visual system followed the same rule. Photography moved to black-and-white portraiture only, no exceptions, so it could stand in deliberate contrast to a new signature color system — vibrant “DNA color bands,” each one representing a distinct thread of customer data — turning the brand’s core technology into something you could see. Headlines went bold, all-caps, Proxima Nova: fewer words, said with more authority.
Results
Fueling A New Chapter
The relaunch didn’t creep in — it arrived all at once. Overnight, the company traded illustrations for black-and-white portraiture, playful for authoritative, “cute” for confident. Every employee walked into a fully rebuilt brand on day one — no slow bleed from old to new, no half-measures while the old identity lingered.
Analyst Validation
Independent of the visual refresh, a Forrester Total Economic Impact study found Rocket Fuel’s platform delivered 832% ROI for enterprise customers (based on four Fortune 500 organizations) — real, outside, analyst-backed proof that matched the more authoritative posture the relaunch was built to project.
Operating Efficiency
Non-GAAP net revenue per employee grew from $231K to $286K in 2015 — a business getting measurably more efficient in the same window the brand matured from approachable to authoritative.
If it weren't for Skott's keen work and tenacity, Rocket Fuel's brand story would not have been as strong. I so admire how much pride he takes in his work, and how he's able to bring out the best in the people who work with him.
Skott helped the Rocket Fuel brand grow from start-up to a global, publicly-traded category leader. Making a compelling story about an invisible (and sometimes misunderstood) product was no easy task, but Skott's contributions helped educate and attract customers, while positioning Rocket Fuel as the ideal programmatic partner.
You know that guy who is both culturally awesome and incredibly good at what they do? That's Skott. He helped the Rocket Fuel brand grow from start-up to a global category leader; with a complex product in a company moving at incredible speed. Along the way he also had a great personal brand within the company as team builder, leader and general go-to person for collaboration and great service. It doesn't get much better than that.
